How to Apply: Individual

If you are interested in attending HNMUN as an individual delegate, you will need to apply either to our unique Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Program or to our special application crisis committees. Please note that delegations with less than six students are ineligible to receive a country assignment; therefore, each student, beyond going through the first two steps of the registration system, must also apply to the NGO Program or crisis committees.

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Program

The HNMUN 2012 NGO Program Application will open on September 1, 2011.

The NGO Program is unique to HNMUN and is a fantastic opportunity for delegates to experience a wide range of issues and committees across the conference. Each NGO is allowed to visit any committee within the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, and the Regional Bodies. NGOs have the option of working in a single committee or in several committees during the conference, depending on your personal comfort level and on the relevance of your NGO to the topic areas being discussed. NGOs have no voting status, but other than that, they have the same rights as any other delegate in the committee: NGOs may make speeches, participate in caucus, and lend their expertise to formulating resolutions.

The application for the NGO Program will be available starting September 1, 2011 through our online registration system.  Applications are due no later than 1 November 2011. The US$70 registration fee is due by 1 November 2011 and the US$70 delegate fee, should the application be selected, is due by 1 December 2011. Assignments for the NGO Program will be announced in late November. Please note that delegates part of a larger delegation (6 or more students) must contact their head delegate or faculty advisor in order to submit a special application through the existing delegation account.

Please also note that if you are part of a delegation of less than 6 students, you are ineligible to apply for a country assignment and may therefore apply for spots on the NGO Program. However, space in the NGO Program is limited, and we give priority to delegates applying as individuals. Therefore, we highly encourage you to find at least 6 delegates, in order to qualify for a country assignment.

Thank you for your interest in the NGO Program. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Gillian T. Farrell, Under-Secretary-General for the General Assembly, at ngo@hnmun.org.

Crisis Committees in the Specialized Agencies

The HNMUN 2012 Crisis Committees Application will open on September 1, 2011.

Individuals are also welcome to apply to our innovative continual crisis committees in the Specialized Agencies. These spots are usually reserved for delegates with more MUN experience. HNMUN 2012 offers application spots on eight continual crisis committees:

  • Google Executive Board 2023: Welcome to the executive board of the Internet’s exclusive superpower. The year is 2023, and Google has reached “critical mass.” Faced with a failing budget and a massive infrastructure, Google will no longer be able to conceal its imminent bankruptcy from the public if nothing is done. On the other hand, Google’s far-reaching influence into other corporations, national governments, and the lives of millions around the world necessitates that this issue of collapse must be dealt with immediately and effectively.
  • Exiled Revolutionaries 1850: After a Year of Revolution during which each and every revolution failed to bring about lasting structural reforms, the intellectuals of Europe have congregated in London to discuss one question: what next? Become Marx, Engels, Garibaldi, Kierkegaard, or many others to offer a unique perspective in deciding the way forward in this post-war social order. Taking into account personal, societal, and national interests, what will be your goals and how will you accomplish them?
  • Kuomintang 1949: The year is 1949 and the Kuomintang has retreated to Taiwan with the Communist Party of China on its heels. As a high-ranking official in the governing echelons of the KMT, you will need to deal with the fiercely opposing factions of a culturally divided island. Additionally, the assembly itself is divided on the issues of policy toward mainland China and the Taiwanese citizens and must wrestle with not only with regional and domestic problems,
but also the issue of retaining UN recognition.
  • French Cabinet: The Third Republic of France is facing problems on all sides. Germany has markedly increased aggression with Hitler’s recent remilitarization of the Rhine, and the worst economic depression in history is still devastating the lives of French citizens. As the newly appointed cabinet of the Popular Front, you will need to effectively respond to these problems with domestic policy and measures to shore up alliances abroad. What will be France’s course of action, and which side will you take?
  • North Korean National Defense Commission: The current state of North Korea is facing much uncertainty, as nations around the world await the transition
of power from Kim Jung-Il to his successor. As one of the most forceful leaders of North Korea in the past few decades, Kim Jung-Il’s passing out of power will have significant implications for the state of North Korea and the National Defense Commission itself. You, as a commissioner on the NDC, will decide the powers of the NDC itself as well as the state of North Korea – and the world – in years to come.
  • Joint Cabinet Crisis – The Cuban Missile Crisis – Gabinete Ministerial Cubano: Bienvenidos al año 1962. We are thrilled to offer an unprecedented bilingual Triple Joint Cabinet Crisis committee, featuring two cabinets run in English, and one cabinet run exclusively in Spanish. As high-ranking officials of the Cuban Cabinet under the leadership of Prime Minister Fidel Castro, you will be faced with two world superpowers that both have vested interests in your nation’s geographic location and political landscape. If Cuba is to be more than a pawn in the Cold War chess game between the US and the USSR, this is the time to make those decisions. How, if at all, will you change history?
  • Joint Cabinet Crisis – The Cuban Missile Crisis – Ad Hoc Council of the CPSU: Welcome comrades to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. As a delegate in the second of the three committees in this Joint Cabinet Crisis, you will be one of the USSR’s highest ranked governmental and military officials. In order to accomplish the Soviet agenda of spreading communism and limiting the US influence in Latin America, the CPSU delegates must use whatever means necessary to sow the seeds of Soviet hegemony in the Western hemisphere.
  • Joint Cabinet Crisis – The Cuban Missile Crisis – US EXCOMM: The third committee of the Joint Cabinet Crisis will take place within the top echelons of United States government under President John F. Kennedy. Delegates will need to advise the President on the acute challenges of the Cold War around the world, and focus specifically on the Soviet encroachment in an island only 723 kilometers from US soil. The committee’s decisions hold extraordinarily high stakes for the future of Latin America, the two superpowers, and the rest of the world in a showdown of force and intimidation.

The application for the crisis committees will be available starting September 1, 2011 through our online registration system.  Applications are due no later than 1 November 2011. The US$70 registration fee is due by 1 November 2011 and the US$70 delegate fee, should the application be selected, is due by 1 December 2011. Assignments for the crisis committees will be announced in late November. Please note that delegates part of a larger delegation (6 or more students) must contact their head delegate or faculty advisor in order to submit a special application through the existing delegation account.

Thank you for your interest in our crisis committees. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Serena Bai, Under-Secretary-General for the Specialized Agencies, at info@hnmun.org.
