Baby, Where the Hell Is My Sec-Gen

HNMUN Secretariat, 2027

Directors: Victor Bowker & Hanley Poyer

Topic Summary

Harvard National Model United Nations is not just another conference. For over 70 years, HNMUN has set the standard for Model United Nations around the world, bringing nearly 2,000 delegates to Boston each year to debate, negotiate, and fight for the coveted committee gavel. But behind every polished opening ceremony, perfectly timed committee session, and crisis update is a Secretariat that spends nearly a year making the magic happen.

The HNMUN Secretariat is made up of Harvard’s most dedicated, sleep-deprived, and Model UN-obsessed students. Chosen for their experience, leadership, and love of the conference, these staffers are responsible for transforming months of planning into one unforgettable weekend. At the center of it all is the Secretary-General, Fayyaz Razi, the visionary tasked with leading HNMUN 2027.

This secretariat begins work on Monday, February 8th, 2027, just days before the conference opens at the Marriott Copley Place. Secretariat members gather in the hotel lobby for breakfast before beginning the final push toward conference weekend. But as Under-Secretary-Generals arrive, one person is missing: the Secretary-General.

At first, it was brushed off as classic conference-week chaos. Then the texts go unanswered. His Instagram shows no activity since the night before. After an hour, concern turns into panic. The Senior Director of Security heads to the Secretary-General’s room on the 35th floor, uses an all-access key, and finds… nothing. No Fayyaz. No luggage. No sign he was ever there.

Now, with over 1,700 delegates, faculty, and staff arriving in just a few days, the Secretariat faces an impossible task: find the missing Secretary-General, keep the conference running, and prevent HNMUN from collapsing before Opening Ceremonies even begin.

The clock is ticking. The delegates are coming. The gavel is waiting.

Can you save HNMUN before the world’s most influential Model UN conference becomes its greatest scandal?

Director’s Letter

Good Day Delegates,

Allow me to be one of the first to welcome you to the 73rd iteration of Harvard National Model United Nations, and–even more importantly–to the HNMUN Secretariat Committee!

My name is Victor Bowker, and I am a Senior at Harvard College. I am pursuing a concentration in Government as well as a Language Citation in Mandarin.

Born and raised 45 minutes south of Cambridge, in Scituate, Mass, I grew up on the water. Spending my summer days tanning and teaching sailing was the ultimate gig, and it will forever be the best job I’ve ever had. If you ever have the opportunity to learn the art of sailing, I highly recommend it.

During my golden years, I competed on the circuit, but frankly, I got scared by the power dels and so I gave up. Instead, I am now the President of the Harvard International Relations Council, the overrarching corporation in charge of HNMUN and our other programs (like big, bad ICMUN)! I also love taxes.

Delegates, I know some of you to be quite fierce. I encourage you to bring that ferocious dedication to the committee room, through interesting speeches, broad and complex arcs, and compelling–but sparse–JPDs.

Crack open a Red Bull, refill your stapler, and prepare for the most exciting committee of your college career.

See you soon,

Victor E. Bowker

Crisis Director’s Letter

Greetings delegates,

Welcome to the 73rd session of Harvard National Model United Nations, and to the HNMUN Secretariat!

My name is Hanley, and I’m a rising junior at the College studying Molecular and Cellular Biology and Government. I’m originally from the vast farmlands of Deansboro, New York (aka Upstate!). I’m an active member of the MUN community at Harvard, competing with our intercollegiate team and serving as Co-Director of Crisis Training.

Beyond MUN, I lead pre-orientation trips through the First-Year Outdoor Program, engage with service work on campus, and conduct research at Boston Children’s! In my free time, I love listening to live music, hiking, and trying new pasta recipes.

I am beyond excited to serve as your Crisis Director for this secretariat committee, and I look forward to seeing how you navigate the unpredictable nature of conference politics, delegate scandals, slow elevators, and crises that arise quickly and threaten the success of HNMUN.

As a crisis delegate, my favorite committees are those built on chaos and creativity, and I can’t wait to see what you all bring to the table.

If you have any questions before the conference, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

See you soon!

Hanley Poyer
