Council of the Olympian Gods

“We didn’t start the fire”

Director: Antara Martins

Topic Summary

The Council of Olympus invites delegates to step into the world of Ancient Greece, where the Gods must confront a growing crisis of faith among mortals. As philosophy spreads across the Greek world and city-states shift toward democracy and political independence, belief in the Olympians has begun to weaken. War, poverty, disease, and declining prosperity have further caused many mortals to question whether the gods still deserve their devotion.

In this committee, delegates will represent the major Greek gods and goddesses each with their own interests, rivalries, and visions for restoring Olympus’ influence. Throughout committee, delegates will debate how far the gods should go to regain mortal belief. There may be miracles, or prophecies or even civil war. Every decision will shape both the fate of Olympus and the future relationship between gods and mortals. Will you restore human faith in the Gods, or die out from civilization forever?

Dear Delegates,

It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the Council of the Olympian Gods for the 2027 session of Harvard National Model United Nations! I am honored to serve as your Director and am very excited to work alongside you and your incredible problem solving and teamwork skills.

My name is Antara Martins and I am a rising sophomore living in Leverett House studying Government and Philosophy. I was born and raised in London, UK, so moving to the United States was definitely a huge change, but such a rewarding experience. I was a big debater in high school, captaining my school’s team and competing around the UK, discovering MUN here at Harvard. I now compete for Harvard’s Intercollegiate Model United Nations Team (ICMUN) which is filled with my favorite people on campus and alongside whom I’ve made some of my best memories here! Last year I was the Assistant Director for both the Historical Economic and Social Council (HECOSOC) at HMUN and the Hunger Games Specialized AdHoc Committee for HNMUN. I will also serve as an Under-Secretary-General for HMUN Dubai 2027. I hope to use all of the skills and lessons I have developed over this time to deliver a rewarding and enriching experience that honors your hard work.

Outside of MUN, I compete on the Mock Trial team here (unfortunately I live to argue), where I serve as their Seminars Director, organizing our educational program for high school students. In my free time I love to explore Boston, try new restaurants with my friends, read thriller novels, watch 2000s Rom-Coms, karaoke and stay up all night debriefing with my roommates. I hope to go to law school one day and practice in the corporate side of things, specializing in mergers and acquisitions.

I am here for you every step of the way as you prepare for our committee, from the early stages of your research to the closing remarks of our session. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns, and I look forward to engaging with you all!

Sincerely,

Antara Martins
