United Nations Security Council

Kashmir Crisis Committee

Directors: Signe Smith & Justin Ricketts

Topic Summary

The United Nations Security Council Kashmir Crisis Committee at HNMUN 2027 will place delegates at the center of one of the most volatile geopolitical disputes of the twentieth century. Set in 1967 following the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, this committee will explore the escalating conflict over Kashmir between India and Pakistan amidst the broader pressures of Cold War politics, nationalism, and postcolonial instability. Delegates will confront questions of sovereignty, self-determination, militarization, and international intervention while navigating fast-moving crisis updates, shifting alliances, and the ever-present threat of renewed war in South Asia. As ceasefire agreements strain and tensions mount along the border, the Security Council must grapple with the challenge of preserving international peace and security in a region where diplomacy, ideology, and power collide.

As the highest authority on international peace and security, the Security Council attracts unique challenges and high-stakes dynamics. Delegates will navigate shifting alliances, real-time briefings, and the influence of world powers while managing the legacy of past interventions, national legitimacy issues, and the possibility of collective action. Crisis situations will demand creativity, analytical thinking, and cultural awareness.

This is not just a crisis to be solved; this is a reckoning with history. We cannot wait to witness you lead, collaborate, and step up to the challenge in what will surely be one of the most intellectually challenging committees at HNMUN 2027.

Director letter, Ad-Hoc of the Secretary-General

Dear fellow delegates,

Welcome to the United Nations Security Council, 1967.

My name is Christopher Shin, and I’m thrilled to be your director of action-packed chaos and mental trauma for HNMUN 2027! I am a senior at Harvard College, double concentrating in Chemical & Physical Biology and Government with a secondary in Music. I grew up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, fifteen minutes out of Philly (go Birds). The psychotic MUN kid in me was born in freshman year of high school after I was lured into the MUN club meeting with free donuts (I'm fat af). Fast forward 8 years now here in college, I'm a retired Harvard ICMUN UNSC delegate coming back to haunt this committee after my years of trauma (and fun).

Yes, the UNSC is weird. We will function as both a double-delegate crisis and general assembly committee. Yes, you will be challenged. From rapid-fire note cycles to speedrunning draft resolutions in 6 hours, you will face obstacles unlike any other MUN committee. Together, we will learn the intricacies of international relations in the Kashmir Valley, each other’s flaws and red flags, and ultimately how to diplomatically solve (or escalate) global conflicts. Whether you’re a UNSC-unc or this is your first time tasting this odd committee, be prepared for an entirely unique experience.

As your director, I’m so excited to see how you all will navigate the challenges and curveballs that your Crisis Director Claire Cao and I will bestow upon you. We’re going to have a blast.

Hang tight till February,

Christopher Shin

Crisis Director Letter, Ad-Hoc of the Secretary-General

Dear delegates,

Welcome to 1967!!

My name is Claire Cao, and I’m so excited to be your Crisis Director! I am a sophomore in Mather House originally from Portland, Oregon and concentrating in Applied Math and Government. At Harvard, I compete on the Intercollegiate Model UN team and staff our high school conferences. Outside of MUN, I’m Co President of Harvard’s Figure Skating club and involved in the Harvard Association for US China Relations. In my free time I love hiking, trying fun ice cream flavors (ask me about berryline or salt and straw), and traveling.

I am so excited to have you all in UNSC. As a double del crisis AND general assembly, this committee is truly like no other. I’m so excited to read your creative notepads, follow along with your arcs, and see many drawings in the margins. I’ll be looking forward to seeing how all of your backrooms make the committee as exciting as possible.

As your CD, I’ll mostly be operating in the backrooms, but I’m super excited to make special guest appearances for crisis breaks.

See you in February!

Claire Cao
