Yer a Wizard!

The Return of the Dark Lord, 1991

Directors: Promise Abawa & Ella Ricketts

Topic Summary

Yer a wizard! Every year, hundreds of new witches and wizards are invited to attend Hogwarts, a wizard academy located in London, UK. By taking Platform 9 ¾, you will enter a world of wonder and magic, complete with 7 years of exciting schooling.

All seems to be well, until rumours that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named may still be alive… and reigns within the halls of Hogwarts. Between navigating the Dark Lord’s resurrection, a dungeon troll, and a three-headed dog, delegates certainly have a lot to juggle in just their first year!

While committee progresses, students at Hogwarts will be put through many tests – straining friendships and pushing their magical abilities. Will you be able to protect the institution? Or will it fall quicker than one can murmur Avada Kedavra?

Director’s Letter, Yer a Wizard!: The Return of the Dark Lord, 1991

Hello Delegates!

Welcome to The Return of the Dark Lord and I am very excited to be your Crisis Director.

I am Promise Abawa, a Junior pursuing a double concentration in Economics and Psychology with a secondary in Philosophy. I was born in Ethiopia but was mostly raised in Texas. I was introduced to MUN in college and am very honored to be part of the Harvard ICMUN team. Surprisingly enough, MUN and heel shopping are not the only aspects of my college career. I also engage in creative writing, consulting, and serve as a mental health counselor at the college.

Although Harry Potter is a story I hold dear, as a Director I look forward to seeing arcs that can recreate this well-known story into one of our own. I love to see well-thought out strategic arcs and create a chaotic committee overall. I enjoy seeing new ways to stretch the creative liberty that crisis provides us with the addition of structured persuasive debates.

That's enough out of me, but I look forward to making this committee unlike any other and witnessing every single one of your sinister agendas.

Crisis Director’s Letter, Yer a Wizard!: The Return of the Dark Lord, 1991

Fellow Wizards & Witches,

Welcome to our Harry Potter committee at the 73rd iteration of HNMUN! My name is Ella, and I am pleased to be serving as your director. Originally from Burnaby, Canada — located directly beside Vancouver — I grew up between snowy mountains and salty Pacific shores. Currently, I am a sophomore studying Government with a secondary focus in Economics. Unlike some of my fellow MUN peers, Harvard was my first exposure to both the circuit and community, and it has become a crucial part of my college experience. When not in the MUN world, I play niche sports, find cheap ways to travel, doomsday scroll through the New York Times — and, as you probably noticed — overuse em dashes.

Given this committee topic, it is unsurprising to hear that I am a huge Harry Potter nerd! I initially fell in love with the franchise when my elementary best friend and I competed to see who could finish the series first. After my decisive victory (sorry Hannah!), I went on to watch all the movies and spin-offs, immersing myself into the vast fandom. I look forward to spending multiple days with all of you, hearing spirited debate complete with lore, magic, and dark-arts-worthy diplomacy.

This upcoming January, I will be diligently rewatching the Philosopher’s Stone through to the Deathly Hallows to prepare for your arrival— it might not be a bad idea for you to do the same.

For now, my mischief is managed.

Ella Ricketts
