Economic and Financial Committee

Sustainable Growth in an Aging Global Population

Directors: Lucia Gallo & Sophia Lichterfeld

This committee will be run as a double delegate committee.

Topic Summary

The global population’s demographic trend is undeniable: according to the United Nations’ World Social Report 2023, titled “Leaving No One Behind in an Ageing World,” there will be an estimated increase in the number of individuals older than 50 of 839 million to 1.6 billion in total by 2050, more than two-fold the number in 2021 of 761 million. While those over 60 accounted for approximately 10% of individuals in 2021, that proportion is predicted to grow to one in every six in the next 25 years. While these statistics prove that medicine and technology are developing for the better, we must consider the impacts of our aging population on economies across the globe.

With the changing populations, both in developed and developing nations, economic systems must shift to accommodate these novel times. In tackling this issue of aging populations, delegates should be prepared to discuss this issue from a multitude of perspectives, including those of the elderly, the young, and the leaders of each respective country. Delegates should also consider the healthcare system, and what changes need to be made in order to best reflect change for the future. ECOFIN’s ultimate goal should be to find a balance between caring for these aging individuals and finding a new way forward. Delegates’ solutions should be comprehensive, creative, and specific in order to succeed in this committee.

Director’s Letter

Dear delegates,

My name is Lucia Gallo, and I am so excited to be your director as part of HNMUN 2026! I’m originally from New York City, and I have been doing Model UN since my freshman year of high school. I’m a current junior at Harvard studying Government and Economics, and I’m especially interested in international relations (what a surprise) and the policymaking process. When I’m not traveling for Model UN, I love playing New York Times games, doing word search puzzles, and trying new restaurants in Boston with friends!

I’m currently one of ICMUN’s Head Delegates and the Under-Secretary General for the General Assembly at our high school conference, HMUN. I’ve staffed both HMUN and HNMUN for the past two years and will be staffing Harvard’s international Model UN conferences in Asia and Africa this upcoming year!

Within committee, I hope to cultivate a welcoming, collaborative environment that fosters creative ideas and lively debate. Throughout the weekend, I’ll be looking for delegates who balance leadership with collaboration, well-researched solutions with innovation, and consistency with flexibility. I am absolutely ecstatic to be your Director for HNMUN 2026. If you have any questions, please feel more than free to reach out!

Sincerely,

Lucia Gallo

Director’s Letter

Hello Delegates!

It is my distinct honor to welcome you to ECOFIN! My name is Sophia Lichterfeld, and I am excited to serve as your Co-Director throughout the weekend.

I am currently a Sophomore at Harvard College concentrating in Applied Mathematics with a focus in Economics and a secondary in Global Health and Health Policy. I am originally from Massachusetts, and last year, I assistant directed a specialized body for HMUN, our high school conference, as well as a GA for HNMUN. I also had a great time directing a GA at HMUN China this past summer and am part of Harvard’s Intercollegiate Model United Nations Team. Beyond MUN, I am the Science and Technology Editor of the Harvard Political Review and involved in the Charles River Economics Labs and Institute of Politics Policy Program. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new cafes with friends, playing squash and violin, and traveling.

I am thrilled to see how you tie together in-room and out-room conversations, respond to other delegates’ ideas, and debate, negotiate, and collaborate throughout this weekend as we explore the trials and tribulations of the Economic and Financial Council. Please reach out with any questions, and I look forward to seeing you in committee!

Sincerely,

Sophia Lichterfeld
