Balancing Innovation and Ethics in Emerging Health Technologies

Directors: Meghna Mitra & Kelly Olmos

This committee will be run as a double delegation committee.

Topic Summary

As health systems worldwide increasingly digitize patient records and integrate artificial intelligence into diagnostics, treatment planning, and public health surveillance, the importance of robust data protection frameworks has become paramount. Health data is among the most sensitive categories of personal information and breaches can result in discrimination and safety threats. While digital innovation improves accessibility and efficiency, especially in under-resourced regions, many countries lack comprehensive legal frameworks and technical infrastructure to ensure patient data is stored securely. Cybersecurity disparities between low- and high-income countries further complicate global cooperation and expose vulnerable populations to greater risk.

AI's growing role in global health—from predicting disease outbreaks to managing electronic health records—raises new ethical and regulatory challenges. These include algorithmic bias, consent in data collection, and inaccurate diagnoses. This committee must consider the diverse capacities of WHO member states and consider the sovereignty of health data. Delegates are encouraged to explore how international standards can balance innovation with privacy and equity in emerging health technologies.

Director’s Letter

Dear delegates,

My name is Meghna Mitra and I am so excited to be your chair for the World Health Organization General Assembly committee! I am a junior at Harvard College concentrating in neuroscience and government with a minor in global health and health policy. I grew up in Hinsdale, a western suburb of Chicago!

Deeply interested in international affairs and public policy, I joined my high school’s Model UN team my freshman year. By senior year I was on the team’s executive board and was the director of finance for a Chicagoland Model UN nonprofit that raised $40K for UN agencies across 4 charitable conferences.

At Harvard I am a part of ICMUN, the collegiate competitive travel team for Model UN, as a GA delegate on the circuit. Last year, I was an assistant director of GADHOC at HNMUN and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. After spending a summer interning with WHO and attending the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, I’m incredibly excited to stimulate diplomacy in critical global health conversations.

Please feel free to connect with me at meghnamitra@college.harvard.edu with any questions or concerns leading up to the committee. Model UN, at the end of the day, is a collaborative effort that celebrates ingenuity, and only when we all work together does innovation really happen. I look forward to meeting all of you!

Sincerely,

Meghna Mitra

Director’s Letter

Dear delegates,

My name is Kelly Olmos, and I am so excited to be your co-chair for the World Health Organization General Assembly committee! I am a junior at Harvard College concentrating in applied mathematics and statistics. I’m originally from the Northside of Chicago.

Although I now study applied mathematics and statistics, I originally began college thinking I would concentrate in government, and that stemmed from my interest in global affairs, policymaking, and understanding how institutions shape the world around us.

I first became involved with Model UN after being an assistant director for the Ad Hoc Committee of the Director-General at HMUN 2025. Since then, I’ve joined Harvard’s ICMUN, the collegiate competitive travel team for Model UN, and competed as a crisis delegate. This year, I’m excited to chair the International Monetary Fund General Assembly committee at HMUN and the World Health Organization General Assembly committee at HNMUN!

The World Health Organization is a space where data meets diplomacy, and I can’t wait to see how you all tackle the global challenges on our agenda. Whether you’re an experienced delegate or new to MUN, I encourage you to stay engaged and support each other throughout committee.

If you have any questions or need anything before committee, feel free to reach out via email at kellyolmos@college.harvard.edu. Model UN is at its best when everyone comes ready to engage and work together, and I’m excited to see where the weekend takes us. I look forward to meeting you all!

All the best,

Kelly Olmos
